University of Ruhuna was indefinitely closed yesterday, due to rising tensions between student union activists and aggressive villagers.
According to university officials, the university shut down early yesterday, and the administration is yet to decide when it will be reopened.
President of the Federation of University Teachers’ Associations (FUTA), Chandragupta Thenuwara said the students and an academic of the university had been receiving continuous threats from unknown persons, allegedly because they had spoken against the plans to hold Deyata Kirula exhibition within the university premises.
“One of the lecturers was assaulted. Some of us believe the Vice Chancellor was directly involved in planning this as well. The lecturer, Dr. Upul Jayaratne, also had his car damaged as someone had thrown stones at it. All this was because he expressed his opinions against conducting the Deyata Kirula to the University Senate,” he alleged.
